A controversial incident at the Olympia 2026 Skicross semi-final has ignited debate, as German hopeful Tim Hronek was seemingly robbed of a medal chance. In a pivotal moment during the race, Swiss competitor Ryan Regez, a former Olympic gold medalist, executed an unsportsmanlike maneuver, illegally blocking Hronek. Regez was seen pushing his arm against Hronek’s neck, causing the German to momentarily lose speed and control. This illicit move allowed Japan’s Satoshi Furuno, an uninvolved party in the direct confrontation, to surge ahead and secure the second qualifying spot for the final, leaving Hronek stunned and out of contention.
Hronek, visibly distraught after the race, expressed his immense frustration. “I was already very charged up, but what can I do? It was out of my hands,” the 30-year-old Skicrosser lamented. He believes Regez acted with malicious intent, possibly thinking, “If I don’t make it to the final, then the others won’t either.” Hronek described being in a perfect position before Regez made a mistake, jumped too short, and then intentionally extended his arm. “Completely held me back, he really completely slowed me down,” Hronek recounted, highlighting the severity of the obstruction.
Despite Regez’s hesitant apology after the event, Hronek found little solace. “That does absolutely nothing for me. He did it, in my eyes quite unsportsmanlike, I can’t buy anything from that now. But that’s just Skicross,” Hronek stated, accepting the harsh reality of the sport’s sometimes aggressive nature. While Regez, who initially finished third, was penalized and relegated to fourth place, this sanction offered no practical benefit to Hronek. As only the top two racers qualify for the final, Hronek, now officially in third, still missed out on the medal race, a devastating outcome given his potential.
Ultimately, Hronek had to compete in the small final, where he finished in sixth place, ahead of fellow German medal hopeful Florian Wilmsmann. The gold medal in the Skicross event went to Italy’s Simone Deromedis, with his compatriot Federico Tomasoni securing silver. Alex Fiva of Switzerland completed the podium with a bronze. Other German participants, Cornel Renn and Florian Fischer, were eliminated earlier in the quarterfinals, making Hronek’s near-miss even more poignant for the German team.
