Florida is set to honor former U.S. President Donald Trump by officially renaming the Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) to “President Donald J. Trump International Airport.” The Republican Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, signed the crucial legislation on Monday, paving the way for the significant change. This move follows approvals from both the state’s House of Representatives and Senate in February, where Republicans hold a clear majority. The proximity of the airport to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in West Palm Beach, his primary residence since 2019, underscores the local connection to this decision. The name change is scheduled to take effect on July 1st, pending final approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The renaming initiative has been a point of contention, drawing sharp criticism from opposition Democrats who view it as a misdirection of priorities and a wasteful expenditure of taxpayer money. Fentrice Driskell, the Democratic Minority Leader in the House, vehemently argued that the Republican leadership is “wasting five million dollars of your tax money to rename an airport after the President,” emphasizing that such a move is not in the best interest of Floridians. She accused state Republicans of prioritizing “political grandstanding” over the financial well-being of their constituents. Despite this opposition, the bill, championed by Republican Senator Debbie Mayfield, progressed swiftly through the state legislature.
Senator Mayfield defended the renaming by citing Trump’s policies, arguing that he deserves the honor for his stringent actions against illegal immigration and for pressing Canada and Mexico to curb fentanyl smuggling into the U.S. During the plenary session on February 19th, Mayfield expressed her honor in presenting the bill to rename Palm Beach International Airport after “the first resident of Florida elected President of the United States.” While Trump was born in New York, he officially changed his primary residence to Florida in 2019, establishing his roots at Mar-a-Lago. This framing emphasizes his status as a Floridian president.
This initiative isn’t the first time Florida has recognized Donald Trump with a significant public gesture. Last year, the state allocated a downtown Miami plot for a potential Donald Trump presidential library, further cementing his legacy within the state. The former Trump administration itself also pursued several high-profile renaming efforts during its tenure. Notably, attempts were made to rebrand the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America,” and Denali, North America’s highest peak, was controversially reverted by decree to its former name, Mount McKinley. Furthermore, the renowned Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. was reportedly also proposed to be known as the “Trump-Kennedy Center.” These examples highlight a broader pattern of associating Trump’s name with prominent landmarks and institutions.
